Qualitative Assessments of Microorganisms Found in Soil, Compost, Castings, and Compost Tea
By Dr. Elaine Ingham and Dr. Carole Ann Rollins.
This manual and poster are designed to help you to do simple, qualitative assessments of the biology in your compost tea, compost extract, worm castings and other materials. This method produces a qualitative estimate, not an absolute quantification of organisms, and should be used to give an idea of what is present at any one moment in time.
The wall poster features colour photographs of many of the kinds of organisms you may encounter in a qualitative assessment, such as bacteria, fungi, protozoa and nematodes, to aid in identification.
Note that in order to perform qualitative assessments you will need a microscope, basic microscope skills and some laboratory supplies.
